  23. WANT TO TYPE THIS AND NEVER HEAR IT AGAIN...

  25. SSFSirst off, let me say that I originally got my Toaster in mid '93 (just
  26. when the VT4000 came and and I just spent a lot on a fast A2000 because
  27. Toasters wouldn't work in anything better -- AAARGH!)  I got it for Video
  28. use -- actually, as a Really Great Toy, as the registration said.  I
  29. discovered LightWave very soon after, and was blown away by it's
  30. capabilities after a year with Imagine.  I love it.  Now here's what I've
  31. got to say about this upgrade business...

  33. I belive the Toaster and LW SA are two COMPLETLY seperate products.  The
  34. reason -- they were released seperatly.  If you have a Toaster, you have a
  35. LOT more than LightWave.  I believe that the current upgrade is well
  36. thought out -- Toaster users would prefer to get a full Toater 4.0 upgrade
  37. -- at least those who see it as more than a $2000 dongle -- and LW SA
  38. owners, not having Toaster hardware, can get the much cheaper
  39. platform-of-your-choise version.  Now, if Toasters all of a sudden became
  40. available for the IBM, I could see an upgrade to the other platform for
  41. Toaster users.  But I consider them to each be seperate products. 
  42. Remember, NewTek didn't HAVE to let LW SA users upgrade to ANY platform --
  43. they could have may you pay a grand and get the PC version.
  44.  
  45. Personally, I plan on getting an Alpha at the end of this year (if this
  46. money thing of mine works out...)  One of the niceAlphas, like a
  47. Raptor-type thing with 2 of the new CPUs coming out in the summer with
  48. speeds measuered in BILLION of instructions per second.  I intend to get
  49. LightWave native to the Alpha for it, and I am willing to scrounge
  50. together about $800 street price for it.  I still intend to use my Amiga
  51. for all of my work (I'm getting an Emplant with Mac/586 emulation so I
  52. won't be left behind if everything goes to hell with CEI/Amiga
  53. International), simply because of the amount LW software already available
  54. and because IS personally LOVE the Amiga OS and don't want to live under
  55. Windoze or the slow Mac OS  (I'll see about UNIX for the Alpha to limit my
  56. exposure to the Windoze enviroment).

  58. I can't really believe ANYONE bought their 1st Toaster system just for
  59. LightWave (their second of third, sure, but not the 1st).  I think you all
  60. realized that the Toaster was also worth a great deal.   I now do much
  61. more 3D work than anything else, but I would never give up my Toaster (or
  62. my soon-arriving Flyer) for a PC that just goes faster.  What I would do
  63. (and I am going to do) is get a suplementary system to help speed up the
  64. rendering even more -- I think the $1000 for LW SA on an IBM is well worth
  65. it since the you'll have an IBM AND and Amiga to render with, even if the
  66. IBM gets most of the work.

  68. Overall, I think NewTek did what they thought was right -- Toaster users
  69. generally want a better Toaster along with Lightwave.  Don't get me wrong,
  70. though -- if you only bought the Toaster for LW, you should be able to
  71. trade in your ENTIRE Toaster for the IBM LightWave or whatever.  I just
  72. believe NewTek made the same decission most of you would have made if you
  73. were in thier shoes.

  75. ON A SIDE NOTE:  I see one big problem with the multi-platform LightWave: 
  76. PLug-ins.  Now, while plug-ins are a good thing, I'm gonna be REALLY
  77. pissed if they release a plug-in for the system I don't use, but then
  78. don't port it over to my system so I can use it.  I don't want to have to
  79. get a MIPS, Alpha, Pentium, Amiga AND the upcoming PowerMac version of
  80. LightWave AND all the CPUs to go with it just to run a freaking plug-in
  81. (yet another reason for that Emplant, assuming the plug-ins can work
  82. across platforms -- probobly not.  Oh, well).  I've heard at least one
  83. developer saying it would not be hard to port over the C code to other
  84. systems, but me on my lowly Amiga may not be considered a big enough base
  85. to make a port for.  I'd like to hear comments on this.

  87. OK.  I hope I didn't ruffle too many people's feathers with this letter. 
  88. I just consider LW SA and the Toaster seperate products, and as such, not
  89. cross-upgradable.  But that's just me.  See ya...
